opportunities to build on the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired at Key Stage 2. They are taught to design and make products by combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in a variety of contexts, including: resistant materials and control (wood, metal, plastics and electronics), textiles and food.
Students are allowed to make decisions based on the values that underpin society, helping them become active and informed citizens. They are made aware of human achievements and the big ideas that have shaped the world and are encouraged to be enterprising and innovative in their designing and making.
There is an emphasis on having regard for sustainability and consideration of the environmental issues which we are facing in the twenty-first century.
Students in Key Stage Three generally remain in the same D&T teaching group throughout the academic year. Every twelve weeks, the teaching group moves to a different teacher and context (described above).
Key Stage Four
We currently offer students the opportunity to follow a full GCSE course in D&T: Product Design (two years) and a City & Guilds (Level 2) course in CAD (computer-aided design). Design and Technology courses are also offered at AS and A Level within the consortium.
Extra-curricular activities
We have a number of thriving clubs linked with the D&T Department. The CAD club are engaged in developed their computer-aided design skills using the latest 3-D modelling software. The Engineering Club are actively solving real design problems with weekly input from an Engineer from the TMUK (Toyota Manufacturing UK) engine plant in Deeside. We also have a proud and successful history of involvement in the Toyota Challenge. Teams of Flint High School students have previously reached the national finals of the competition (after achieving the accolade of Welsh National Champions).
