Conservation News

07/02/2011

As part of their Geography studies into conservation, Year 8 recently visited Chester Zoo to find out more.  Many thanks to Ms Ellson and Mr Catterall for organising a fantastic day

The aim of the Geography department is to get students interested and excited about the world around them.  Through a study of Wales, Brazil, Italy, Europe and the world around them, they explore different environments and issues in the news, thus extending their locational knowledge and understanding of how processes shape both natural and human landscapes.  They investigate, often in groups, a number of high profile issues eg. whether the London 2012 Olympics should go ahead (who will benefit, who will lose out?), and how worried should we really be about global warming?  To do this they use a wide range of resources both inside and outside the classroom.   Whilst textbooks are still utilised, computer use is becoming increasingly more commonplace as it encourages students to become more independent learners.  Throughout their learning we also try to get students to recognise the part they can play as global citizens in making the world a better place to live in.  Lesson01
