PE
Welcome to the PE department. At Flint High School our aim is to get every child hooked on physical activity. To achieve this we offer a wide range of exciting curricular and extra curricular opportunities. Students at Flint High School have the opportunity to dance at Theatre Clwyd, climb, compete against other schools, sail on Lake Bala, compete against other forms, have a free swim at The Pavilion, lead others in sport, take a GCSE or BTEC in sport, play for the County, play football every break, trampoline, ski, cheerlead ......... amongst other things.
Flintshire Sports Festival - BasketballThe tournament was held at Flint High School, with all schools in the district represented. Mrs Roscoe and year 11 John Davies steered the team of year 7, 8 and 9 students through the preliminary rounds with competent ease. We didn't lose a game and came out as group winners to play Saint Richard Gwyn in the semi finals. This was a tough game but thanks to Jacob Brown top scoring we won through 21 - 18. Unfortunately we met a Mold Alun team in the final who were made up of year 9 pupils who proved too tough for us. Never the less it was a valiant effort by the team and their coaches. Well done for a fantastic second place. The team were; Jacob Brown (tournament top scorer), Luke McGrath, Liam Lloyd, Ryan Lloyd, Ryan Pearce, Curtis Roscoe, Ryan Coleclough, Om Roscoe, Adam , Leon DeBoer, Adam Palmer, Tom Collins, Josh Burkes. Thanks and well done also to year 10 Scott Robinson and year 11 Craig Collins who refereed the matches superbly.

More Able and Talented Girls Tag Rugby
Mrs Roscoe accompanied a group of our year 10 girls to a tag rugby day at St David's High School. The girls had a great time learning the game which was new to them. They were then split up into teams to play matches. The comments by other staff and the coaches about our girls were fantastic. Particularly outstanding was Leila Rhouni who scared her opposition to death with an impressive display of controlled aggression in the contact matches. Apparently it was like watching Moses parting the sea as the defence opened up in front of her, defenders fleeing her raging attack! Well in girl!

TransitionWith the support of 5x60 officer Bethan Roberts and Sports Leaders Ian Rothwell, Josh Davies, Cerys Jones and Lewis Griffiths, years 5 and 6 at our primary schools have been coming up to Flint High School in record numbers to attend transition sports club. Pupils have been given the choice of dodgeball, athletics, football, badminton, rounders and climbing. No wonder we have regularly been getting 40 pupils to the club. Apart from the obvious fun aspect of the club, it has been a great chance for the pupils to acquaint themselves with the school, the staff and each other. Well done and thank you to everyone involved in making this club such a great success. Backing up transition club, was a day of athletics for year 5 pupils organised by our BTEC Sports group. 50 pupils were split into 8 groups to rotate round an athletics circuit which included hurdles, discus, triple jump and relay. Thanks to the fantastic organisation of the BTEC students and the enthusiasm of the year 5 pupils great fun was had by all. Thank you also to Mr Poland who did a great job with hospitality.

Deeside AthleticsIt was a mixed set of results for our athletes, although I have nothing but admiration for the students who take part knowing that the competition is going to be so tough. Celebrating wins is great but some of our students also show a great deal of gumption for example Charlotte Atkins 7th in the 1500m and Kieran Williams who is willing to have a go at any event you ask him to do. Never the less we should celebrate our outstanding performers who have been selected to represent Flintshire at the District Meeting at Deeside on Saturday 12th June;
Also our Year 9 relay team qualified - well done!

So far this year I have competed in 3 international ski events
I believe I have done quite well in these races, In all of the races there were more than 100 racers, my best position was 40th in the British School boys out of 104 racers. I race in two different events Slalom and Grand Slalom, depending on the course a race can last about 40 seconds to 1 minute. At the Welsh Championships I was just with my parents and brother At the British School Boys, I raced for Flint High School, but stayed in a ski camp with friends and coaches from other schools, like the Grange in Chester, Abbeygate College Chester, Kings School and Christleton High School. When I go to camp, our coaches are strict, my parents aren't in charge of me, the coaches are - we have to go and jog in the mornings at 6.30 and we did exercises in the hotel car park. At the English Alpine Championships, I was with my race team which is Telford. Telford is a good team, they have at least 5 people who are in the Children's GB team (they might get to go to the Olympics) I haven't done much snow training in about 6 months, I train on Wednesdays with Telford and my coach, Richard Breese, and I train at The Oval in Runcorn on Fridays my coach Andy. One day I will beat Mr Spearpoint! This is on a dry slope. |

Capoeira
The exciting Brazilian martial art based dance of Capoeira came to Flint High School's year 8,9,10 and 11 boys. It is a fantastic mix of martial arts, samba, break-dancing and gymnastics. Colin Diamond a professional instructor came in and led an introductory session. There was a great response by the lads and I'm sure it is an experience they will remember.
Climbing at The Argoed
Thanks to our friends at The Argoed High School who have an amazing climbing wall, Flint Climbing Club visited their wall for a new challenge. Under the tutorage of Flintshire climbing guru Andy Barker, our students quickly got to grips with the extra challenges the wall presented, including overhangs and higher climbs. The club is extremely popular and it is a lovely mix of students from all year groups.
A special thanks to Freddie Price, Lauren Anderson and Bethan and Theresa Phillips for all their excellent help each week.
