Science at Flint High School
The Science department is suited along its own corridor, with six laboratories served by a full time technician. We have four full time scientists and one scientist on a 0.8 contract.
Our ethos is to implement and deliver high quality learning that is challenging and relevant and to facilitate and encourage independent learners to achieve their potential.
In order to provide the best possible opportunities for our students we offer both academic and vocational courses.
Our more able students study AQA Core and Additional Science at GCSE allowing them to go on to study Science at A-Level.
This year we introduced BTEC 1st Certificate and Diploma. We are the first school in North Wales to offer a BTEC course in Science. This course is proving very popular amongst our students and enables them to gain the vocational skills required for Science related post 16 college courses and prepares them for employment.
We offer AS and A2 Chemistry as part of a consortium of schools within Flintshire and from September we will also be offering A-Level Physics.
At KS3 students study through a thematic approach. Essential Skills and AFL are fundamental in our approach to developing successful independent learners. Regular assessed levelling activities ensure tracking of progress.
We work closely with the Flintshire More Able and Talented programme providing exceptional extra curricular learning opportunities that inspire and develop our young scientists.
The department is well resourced and this year acquired 32 wireless laptop PCs for the exclusive use of science.
